The Swan 55 makes the debut at Cannes Yachting Festival 2022, together with her bigger sisters, the Swan 58, which was introduced to the world last year, and the Swan 78 with a grey hull.

Designed by Germàn Frers interior design by Misa Poggi, the new Swan 55 represents a new generation of hull design developed over the past couple of years with the assistance of the latest tools available today to study the behavior of the canoe body in all sailing conditions.

This latest iteration of the Swan 55 model Line represents a new generation of hull design developed over the past couple of years with the assistance of tools available today to study the behavior of the canoe body in all sailing conditions“, declares Germàn Frers.

These are hulls with a powerful back end that attain maximum sailing length and low resistance while heeled thus the lowest possible displacement/length ratio and they provide excellent balance through the range of heel angles in combination with the well-proven twin rudder set up.

When designing the bow sections which are well rounded transversally and have a sharp entry angle, we have favored the sailing condition and comfortable ride when heeled.

The hull displacement is the result of a thorough study of weight and the position of the equipment onboard. These boats need to carry a fair amount of equipment for the comfort of the people living and enjoying life on board. However, the speed will be very good all around.

Swan 55, the deck

The deck is the most important area on a sailing yacht – the place for controlling the yacht at sea as well as relaxing at anchor or in harbour, for enjoying the fun of sailing in pleasant weather and also conquering thrilling heavy storms while remaining safe and sheltered.

Swans have always been designed to take the deck and its organization into great account. From the very first yacht in the late 60’s, every Swan has a deck optimized in every detail for efficient, safe and enjoyable sailing and living aboard in great comfort, be it underway, at anchor or in marinas. Today our yachts show a hallmark deck organization, with well-separated areas for handling the boat while sailing and living comfortably in all possible situations, be it sunbathing, dining or swimming. Great care is also given to proper protection both from adverse weather and from sun with well-designed sprayhoods, biminis and awnings.

Swan 55

The new Swan 55 is perfectly in line with this ethos, adding in some new innovations that enhance livability stili further in the cockpit and transom areas, like the “transformer” tables or the extra-long swimming platform, an exclusive new feature on a yacht of this size, which enhances the livability of this area, resulting in a proper beach area derived from superyachts.

Shorthanded cruising is facilitated by five equally specified winches, all-electric as standard, positioned to allow a single crew member to handle the boat alone. The hallmark design of the coamings protecting the benches results in an extra-wide cockpit area, where the twin “transformer” tables offer a variety of setups, from lunch to sunbathing to “pouffe” position. Ahead of the mast, a wide sunbathing area integrated into the coachroof offers the proper shape for the self-tacking track, designed for the staysail but suitable for the jib as well. More forward, a large, deep locker is dedicated to sail and voluminous gear storage.

Swan 55

Swan 55, the interiors

The interior has been designed having maximum comfort in mind for long periods, both under sail and at anchor. For style and finishing the new Swan 55 features four different moods: Swan Soul which embodies the typical Swan ambiance, Scandi Vision for a more northern atmosphere, Blue Genoa paying homage to the colours of the ocean and more traditional seafaring and Velvet Vibe for a more passionate owner.

Swan 55

The saloon and galley are designed for maximum livability and social interaction but also to be functional and practical while under sail. The organization of the spaces allows an additional utility cabin dedicated to storage or this can be converted into a crew cabin with an enclosed head and a sink.

The saloon has a C-shaped sofa with a central table to port while the starboard area including the chart table can be configured into three different layouts according to the owner’s needs.

Nauta Design has been at the leading edge of a four-year project that ended on 23 June with the launch of the first-ever ClubSwan 80 racer. As well as kickstarting a new one-design class, the rocket ship is the fifth incarnation of Pier Luigi Loro Piana’s famous My Song.

It marks  35 years of collaboration between Nauta Design and this dedicated owner. But it is the first time that Nauta and Nautor’s Swan have worked together. The Finnish boat builder coordinated the project with Juan Kouyoumdjian on the naval architecture, Nauta for the interior and cockpit design and Persico Marine as build partner.

Exposed carbon fibre, wafer-thin mahogany veneer and artful lighting will turn the first ClubSwan 80 yacht into a super stylish cruiser. The brief for Milan’s Nauta Design studio was to give a thoroughbred one-design racer a second character as daysailer and a super sporty cruiser.

It was a fascinating project from the off, with the client intent on establishing the best approach for an 80ft racing monohull.  The final choice went for a canting keel and a forward rotating canard that would provide the best compromise between performance and usability. This evolved into the ClubSwan 80 one design, where the goal is to recruit further owners to develop a competitive racing circuit.

The priority was speed, performance and fun, but the owner always likes to be able to use the yacht for a cruise with the family or with friends as well,” explained Nauta co-founder Mario Pedol. “He wanted to have good performance upwind as well as downwind – a rocket in both directions. After all, the first round the upwind mark has the advantage.”

ClubSwan 80

Once the key design features had been established, Persico Marine was selected to build the high-tech carbon fibre hull and structures, cleverly engineered by Pure Design & Engineering. The second stage of the challenge for Nauta was to design an interior for this first yacht that took nothing away from the purity of the racing experience while adding some welcome finesse and comfort for cruising with the family.

We turned technology into elegance, thanks to Pigi’s inputs – inside it is all carbon,” says Pedol. “We worked in the base comforts for permitting cruising use of the boat: fridge, galley, some sort of aircon and showers.”

ClubSwan 80

The solution was to create a modular interior that drew on lightweight furniture and fabric bags that could be quickly and easily detached and taken ashore.

Almost all the interior elements can be removed, from the gimbled oven and saloon tables to the carbon-fiber toilets in the three bathrooms. Just the bench seats in the saloon are built-in, serving a structural purpose and doubling as watch berths when racing offshore. Even the simple aircon system is removable.

The king-size bed in the master cabin can be split in two then flipped to create a twin cabin. The bed here, as in the aft cabins, can be quickly unfastened and removed entirely for racing.

ClubSwan 80

Lighting was a major part of the design, including spotlighting and about 100 m  of LED strings, mostly concealed inside the removable furnishings. In total it added just 4.5kg to the boat, after Nauta conducted a detailed analysis of the impact of different wattages. “Lighting was a massive topic on this boat,” says Martino Majno, sales and project manager. “Being a black hull, we’ve really played with three separate levels of lighting, starting with those needed just for racing, with discrete red lighting for night racing. For cruising, there are longitudinal indirect rope lights. We also played with functional, architectural lighting – focused on some specific areas.”

Mahogany veneer is used sparingly around spotlights and in strips throughout the accommodation to provide a touch of elegance, and a welcome gleam that contrasts with the carbon fibre. “Mahogany highlights are one of the client’s signatures,” says Pedol. “The boat also showcases laminated linen counters and tables – where flax fibres are laminated into resin”. Pedol says of the design: “It has been a real four-way project with our great friend Pigi. Since 1986 and our first My Song design, we have shared the love for  both racing and enjoying life at sea in general!

Nautor’s Swan have announced the completion of their flagship yacht, the 38.ClubSwan 125 Skorpios, following her technical launch in May. The 42.62-metre yacht is a high-performance maxi sailing yacht, and is the first hull of the new racing series from ClubSwan.

Set to be the fastest mono-hull sailing yacht in the world, she hit the water in Pietarsaari and is set to debut at the Rolex Fastnet Race. Skorpios’ hull, superstructure and decks are constructed from carbon fibre prepreg with Nomex and Corecell cores, and she is fitted with a deep draught canting keel reducing weight, all of which help her to achieve her extremely light displacement.

Painted with a striking yellow and black exterior, the sailing yacht, which was designed by naval architect Juan Kouyoumdjian, is “the most advanced and radical maxi yacht in sailing history” according to the yard. Power comes from a Marine Diesel Sweden VGT 500.

A rotating C-foil, with an asymmetrical profile, has been developed to give vertical lift and reduce her displacement and bring her into a skimming position. She is also equipped with twin rudders for advanced control while sailing at high speeds.

The brief was at first for a very fast super yacht for inshore racing, but, as we were developing the project, it changed. We all realized, the owner at first, this yacht was meant to be a record-breaking machine.” commented Enrico Chieffi, Nautor Group Vice President and CS125 Project Leader, speaking from the deck of the boat right after the sea trials. “And so here we are, the brief has changed, and the boat has been developed to be successful in offshore racing and intending to beat all the monohull records around the world”.

Finnish yacht builder Baltic Yachts has launched the 39.6 metre Baltic 117 sailing yacht, which has now been named Perseverance.  The 39.6 metre custom classic sloop, which was built at the yard’s Jakobstad facility, features an advanced composite and is due for delivery later this year.

Perseverance has been constructed as a Baltic 117 Custom Classic and features naval architecture from her builder, Baltic Yachts, whilst her exterior lines come from the drawing boards of Dykstra Naval Architects. The sloop-rigged yacht is constructed of GRP and is equipped with an electric propulsion system, which is powered by a lithium-ion battery bank allowing her to operate in ‘silent mode’.

Accommodation will be for a total of eight guests in a forward owner’s suite and three other double guest cabins. Crew accommodation aft will allow for a staff of six.

This yacht is an advanced composite 117ft (35.8m) Custom Classic sloop from the board of renowned Dutch designers Dykstra Naval Architects.

She has distinctive pilot cutter-style features, including a straight stem, bowsprit, counter stern and deep bulwarks, but a very modern approach to emissions and the environment.

The yacht is designed with an owner’s suite forward and three double guest cabins, with crew accommodation for six arranged aft.

Designed by Dykstra Naval Architects, the Baltic 117 Custom, with her tall bermudan rig, displacement of just over 100 tons and deep bulwarks, looks as though she’ll be a fast and comfortable sailing yacht, ideal for her owner’s global cruising ambitions.

Dykstra Naval Architects describe the yacht as ‘a pilot cutter with timeless elegance’. deVosdeVries design is styling the ‘light and contemporary’ interior using stained oak, dark bog oak trims and ‘industrial chic hardware’.

With an electric propulsion system powered by a lithium ion battery bank this global cruising yacht will be able to operate in ‘silent’ mode for long periods.

The new Swan 108 is based on the evolution of the previous Maxi Swan, particularly in regard to the exterior lines, but with the addition of innovative solutions never applied before by the Finnish yard.

Announced during a virtual press conference, the Swan 108 plugs the gap between the Swan 98 and the soon-to-splash Swan 120 flagship. The new model is hailed by the yard as an evolution of the current Maxi yacht line, featuring modified exterior lines courtesy of German Frers and Lucio Micheletti.

“Last December I anticipated the plan to have a bigger sister to the Swan 88 to fill the space between the Swan 98 and Swan 120,” says Giovanni Pomati, Nautor Group CEO. “It was an anticipation that we are here to announce officially. With awe-inspiring teamwork of international designers– German Frers, Misa Poggi and Lucio Micheletti – we have been able to design and sell the first Swan 108. This yacht is the expression of our philosophy: she draws on the amazing heritage we have at Nautor and sets a new and contemporary tone.”

Designed with moderate freeboards like every Swan yacht, this new model offers seaworthiness, great comfort at sea also in very rough conditions, and handles gently in waves.

Nautor's swan 108

She is a proper bluewater yacht with great performance and able to compete at top level when required.
The innovative deck layout comes in two solutions for the cockpit. The owner can choose a step in the aft deck area or a completely flush deck. Both solutions mean that the area is suitable for sunbathing or just as a lounge area to sit and relax.

We always start a project with a clean slate as a way to investigate and double check the choices available and to match the briefs from the sales force closely” says German Frers. “There is no specific change you need to make once you go over a 100’ but just continue observing the mathematics and laws of physics. Specifically: length changes linearly, areas are squared, volume is cubed, stability varies to the 4th exponent”.

The Swan 108 follows a number of new models from the Finnish yard, including the Swan 88, Swan 98 and Swan 120 as well as the racer ClubSwan 80 announced at the end of 2020.

After the success achieved by the smallest in the range, ClubSwan 36, with more than 20 units already sold, the ClubSwan 50 with 27 units sold, and the brand new ClubSwan 80, with the first hull under construction at Persico Marine, the new Super maxi ClubSwan 125 is taking shape.

The yacht will be ready to hit the water for her official launch in June. “ClubSwan 125 makes us very proud at Nautor’s Swan. This boat can be seen as the real representation of innovation through heritage” says Enrico Chieffi, Vice-President. “Seeing our boatbuilders in Pietarsaari, working together with the most talented team in the sailing industry coming from everywhere in the world, it’s something extraordinary, pushing everyone to another level.

Harken’s carbon-top 1235 primary winches have been selected for the ClubSwan 125. These winches are developments of Harken’s 1135 grand prix winches that employ integral winch base and ring gear assemblies machined from a single block of stainless steel to extend load capacity from 9 to 11 tonnes. The two utility pit winches are Harken 990s, which have been proven over thousands of ocean miles and are currently serving in the Volvo Ocean 65 fleet.

The boat’s custom athwartship jib system utilizes Harken titanium TTR2 sheaves for maximum efficiency. The custom mainsheet system is a development of Harken MEGA CRX traveler cars utilizing Harken titanium TTR2 sheaves. All padeyes are in-deck soft-attach titanium loop padeyes. All in-deck sheaves will be titanium TTR2 as well. Harken TRR2 loop blocks and the new generation of Harken new high-load snatch blocks are specified for sheet leads above deck. Nautor’s Swan is breaking new ground with the ClubSwan 125 supermaxi yacht. North Sails’ combination of analytical tools and industry-leading 3Di sails make them the sailmaker of choice for this exciting new project.

The naval architect Juan Kouyoumdjian, who has designed three Volvo Ocean Race champions, has worked together with the shipyard to bring the project into reality.

The new Baltic 117 is an advanced composite 35.8m Custom Classic sloop from the board of renowned Dutch designers Dykstra Naval Architects. The launch will be in summer 2021.

She has distinctive pilot cutter-style features, including a straight stem, bowsprit, counter stern and deep bulwarks, but a very modern approach to emissions and the environment. There will be a notable emphasis on efficiency with features such as ‘smart’ cabins, designed to automatically minimise power consumption when unoccupied, and air conditioning energy waste re-cycled to heat water.

Side boarding ladders, such as the one being installed aboard the new Baltic 117 Custom, are a convenient method of easy and safe transfer from a tender. They can be deployed hydraulically at the touch of a button and stowed inside the hull, with the hull closure leaving the topsides perfectly fair. A side ladder requires less internal hull space for stowage than a transom ladder. Features include teak finished steps, a swimming and boarding ladder at the foot and a fresh water shower at deck level. Folding steps and safety rails are deployed completely automatically, making operation fast and straightforward.

Finnish sailing yard Nautor’s Swan has added the new Swan 88 (26.5 metre) to its line of Maxi Swan sailing yachts. Swan’s involvement in the maxi yachts segment started in the 1970s, with the launch of Sayula II, and since then more than 15 Swan maxi models have been designed, resulting in the production of 100 yachts above 24m.

But the Finnish brand’s landmark Maxi moment happened in 2010 with the launch of the Swan 115, which has a hull design inspired by the big ocean racers, a maximum beam point repositioned far aft to allow a much more stable heeling of the boat, twin rudders and an interior design that prioritizes volume and comfort.

Nautor's swan 88

With four Maxis currently in build (two Swan 98s, a Swan 120 and a ClubSwan 125) there is a great deal of anticipation and excitement for the coming months at the shipyard. The third Swan 98 is due for launch in April, while the fourth hull of the same model will be the first to have an owner-forward layout. Also expected for delivery next year is the newest unit of the Swan 120 flagship, while the ultra-fast ClubSwan 125 is poised to beat all the world records. But not one to rest on their laurels, the designers and naval architects at Nautor’s Swan are already working on new projects.

Sitting at the entry point to the world of maxi yachting, the design of the Swan 88 is based on an evolution of the brand’s previous popular yachts but with the addition of various innovative features never before seen on a Swan.

Nautor's swan 88

The deck is the heart of the yacht

As on every Swan, the heart of the yacht is its deck, which on the Swan 88 can be separated into four defined areas, the first three located in the cockpit/aft while the fourth is found in the fore section. In the guest cockpit, Swan has introduced a newly evolved coachroof design on the 88 that takes inspiration from previous generations of maxi yachts, bringing together the practicality of an integrated sprayhood and bimini, with a very elegant line.

The cockpit’s modular benches can be arranged in a number of different configurations, such as lounging and full dining set-ups. The maneuvering area with the yacht’s winches and steering pedestals is centrally positioned in this area, to allow space at the stern for a completely new beach area where guests can recline or lie down, with access to the water as well as the large tender garage. Forward of the mast, there is a fourth area which can be used for sunbathing or as a sunset lounge, with a large sail locker and anchor locker below the deck.

The Swan 88’s appendages are optimized for cruising, with a standard moderate draft of 4m and options for shallow-draft, telescopic and performance keels. The twin rudders convey multiple advantages including a shallower draft and improved balance while sailing.

The New Model is an evolution of the previous models, but for this one we’ve done a complete study for the balance, the performance, the position of the rig and the shape of the sails” says Germàn Frers. “According to the results of these studies, we designed the hull”.

A veritable blue water yacht, the Swan 88 is designed to provide a soft, comfortable ride even in rougher conditions, with an optimized heeling angle of no more than 20 degrees. With an effective load line length of less than 24m, it is economical to run and manage, while also providing wide appeal on the charter market and upholding a high resale value.

Comfort on board

Designed with guest and crew comfort on extended trips in mind, a range of layout arrangements and mood concepts is available to customize the yacht’s interior and style to an owner’s tastes. The standard interior is the typical owner-forward layout, with four ensuite guest cabins and a dedicated area for up to four crew.

“When you walk onto a boat, you should walk into a very comfortable, harmonious and magical place. This magic comes from the balance created between volume, geometries, architecture and materials.” Misa Poggi – Interiors Designer.

The interior has a number of features to increase the sense of space onboard, including generous windows in the hull and coachroof. One of the most remarkable design innovations of the interior is the substantial transparent stairway leading from the cockpit to the salon, with a further two stairways leading down to the accommodation level aft, creating a spectacular entrance.

The owner’s cabin is spacious and comfortable with a large ensuite, while further aft the guest VIP cabin can be optionally converted into a TV lounge, and the two twin guest cabins with optional pullman berths. The aft section is separated into two separate areas; the first is a half-crew, half-guest area, with a big galley and a second dinette, which can be used as crew mess, but also for guests’ breakfasts, or as a comfortable place where children can stay protected while sailing. And further aft, there is a dedicated crew area accessed via the cockpit, with two twin bunk cabins, separate showers, and space for appliances.
