In many cases, [Option 2] is only possible years AFTER deciding against [Option 1]! Of course we are not talking about the decision to buy Gucci leather jackets here, the choices involved in most people’s lives are different, but the end result is the same.

Should I buy a better car?
Should I buy a Starbucks coffee?
Should I go out for a meal in a restaurant?
Should I choose instant gratification, or resist immediate temptations in order to achieve a much more ambitious future goal?…

We made a conscious decision to stop wasting money years ago. We have been investing the money we have saved into simple money-making assets.

For example, we have been investing funds into Funding Circle, where over the last few years we have seen consistent annual growth of 7.2% net. By choosing the ISA option, the resulting interest is tax-free!

As a result of the above, despite our normal backgrounds, we are now in a position (in our mid-thirties) where we can sail for several months per year, as well as spend time with our families in the UK and Italy.

We are doing this in a sustainable way. We haven’t cut ties with the land and we are not “sailing until the money runs out”, we are meticulously planning our finances to ensure we are living in a sustainable manner, both now and into the future.

Here are 3 very different ways you can make money while you sail around the world (Or do whatever else floats your boat)…

Example #1 is investing. This can give you a passive income (you can literally get paid while you sail, lie on a beach or sleep), with the downside of this method being risk. You also need funds to invest, which you have to obtain elsewhere.

Example #2 is consulting. You can do this from anywhere on the planet provided you have solid internet access. Consulting can make full use of all of your education, skills and experience, and if you can provide a lot of value to others you can earn a good hourly rate for your time. The downsides are that this is not scalable and it is not passive at all. If you stop working for whatever reason, you stop earning.

Example #3 is book publishing as a business. Again, you can do this from anywhere on the planet, and it has the potential to create truly passive income for you for many years to come. The downside is you have to be prepared to put work in before you start to see substantial results, and unless you are learning from someone who knows the business inside out, you will have a steep learning curve.

Some initial investment is required, but far less than a traditional ‘bricks and mortar’ business. These are just three examples of the plethora of options available for cruisers these days. There are lots of reasons you might want to run your outboard out of the water and if you want to make it last a very long time [like our ancient old thing!] then flushing it through with fresh water does it a lot of good.

This dissolves deposited salts within the water-cooling passageways inside the engine and flushes out other debris that you don’t want to collect in there.

Of course the water keeps the engine cool while you are running it inside the fender too, as well as providing a water supply to the impellor, preventing damage caused by dry running…

This simple trick is a really easy way to do this. It has the following advantages:

1. You can use an old, punctured fender, which is free!
2. The fender can be rolled up for storage, always handy on a boat.
3. You make the lines the right size so that they can hook on top of your outboard in no time.
